We, the research software engineers at the Ghent Centre for Digital Humanities (GhentCDH), dive deep into the fascinating world of Digital Humanities at Ghent University. From aiding access to ancient artifacts to mining the mysteries of medieval texts, we’re all about using tech to explore the humanities. Our team offers support and advice on digital tools and does custom development work, ensuring that every project can reach its goals.
Recently, a talented student developer - Miel Peeters - has significantly contributed to migrating the Belgian Science and Technology Online Resources from an aging MediaWiki platform to a modern environment. The platform contains a unique mix of stories, biographies and descriptions dealing with Belgian science history. The tasks for Miel involved parsing the current MediaWiki-markup, recategorizing and restructuring MediaWiki pages into meaningful concepts, and building a web front-end for data-cleanup to facilitate the migration process.
As always, GhentCDH aims to release reusable software components in general and the specific contributions of Miel as Open Source software. The Treesitter-based MediaWiki parser built by Miel is released on the GhentCDH GitHub Page.
